Who Must Register for VAT in the UAE?

Mandatory Registration Requirements

You must register for VAT if:

  • Your taxable supplies exceeded AED 375,000 in the past 12 months
  • Your taxable supplies are expected to exceed AED 375,000 in the next 30 days
  • You make imports that are subject to reverse charge VAT

Important Deadline

You must apply for VAT registration within 30 days of exceeding the mandatory threshold. Late registration incurs a penalty of AED 10,000.

Voluntary Registration

Businesses may choose to register voluntarily if their taxable supplies or expenses exceed AED 187,500. Voluntary registration is beneficial if:

  • You want to recover input VAT on business purchases
  • Your customers are VAT-registered businesses who can claim input VAT
  • You plan to scale your business and will soon exceed the mandatory threshold
